Archaeological Museum of Paros

The Archaeological Museum of Paros, located in Paroikia just a short walk from the ferry port, was founded in 1960 to house the island’s rich archaeological finds. Housed today in a building expanded in stages (1960, late 1960s, and 1995), the museum showcases artefacts spanning from the Neolithic period through Roman times, all unearthed on Paros, Antiparos and the nearby islet of Despotiko.

Building and Layout

The museum complex comprises three main exhibition rooms, an interior courtyard, a gallery space, and a small on site museum shop. The original hall was constructed adjacent to the Parikia junior high school, with successive wings added to accommodate growing collections. Its whitewashed exterior and simple lines harmonize with the Cycladic townscape, while the interior galleries offer climate controlled displays and clear visitor circulation.

Research and Conservation

Under the supervision of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, the museum staff conduct ongoing conservation of marble and ceramic objects, publish excavation reports, and collaborate with universities on Cycladic archaeology. Temporary loans to national exhibitions have helped contextualize Parian marble’s role in ancient sculpture across the Mediterranean.
